the canada chronicles
Righto. Here it is. The Canada Chronicles, or How to go to a foreign country for 4 months on the pretext of a student exchange program while actually just behaving like you're on holiday.
So, for those who know me, here i am, archiving in minute detail my life here in beautiful Vancouver, B.C. Come to think of it, even if you don't know me, here i am anyway, doing that exact same thing.
Anyway, this blog took some time to set up, what with procrastination and other technical issues to sort out, but all the same here you have it, in all its admittedly muted glory (I don't speak HTML).
So I've been in Van for 10 days now, and I've done way too much stuff to condense at one shot. Or maybe I've just done a moderate amount of stuff but am way too lazy to type it all here. So, a quick run through:
Day 1: Arrived at YVR 1315hrs. Had Leonard and Auntie Cheng and Victoria and Nicholas pick me up from the airport. Arrived in Coquitlam for a taste of suburban life. Played basketball. Dream team of Nick and Heik whooped ass on Leo and Vic. Accompanied Nicky to soccer practice. Watched in amazement as the coach (the trainer, not the vehicle) unveiled training equipment to rival the EPL. Met some soccer moms and their progeny. Felt tired. Slept early.
Day 2: More of the same. Played Monopoly and watched that little punk Vicky destroy the rest of us with ruthless Trump-like efficiency. She had like everything but 3 properties and more money than the bank by the end of the game. Am thoroughly humiliated. She's one to watch, people. Rented Eight-Legged Freaks and October Sky from Rogers video.
Day 3: Moved into Walter H. Gage. That's what my dorm is called. Met Samuel, Ben, Charlene and Jason the Fitness Freak for lunch, and watched some dragonboat racing (Of all things!). Slept through Chronicles of Riddick at the Norm (that's the theatre on campus).
Day 4: Went for a jog out to Safeway and back. Went downtown with Leonard, took a brochure at the tourist info centre and headed on a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Downtown Van. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone who wants to get familiar with the downtown. Takes only around 2 to 3 hours. More if you want to do some shopping along the way.
Hmm. This is so boring. I sense that most of you (if there is anyone actually reading this) have wandered away to get coffee/go to the toilet/ watch tv/ put on your latex costumes (delete as appropriate).
So, in order to provide a better reading experience for all you jabronis out there, I'll cut these archives short.
Instead, here are some interesting, semi-interesting and completely boring thoughts about Vancouver:
The local food here is Japanese. Every other restaurant you see is Jap. And those that aren't, are East Asian.
UBC: University of Being Chinese. Plenty of us yellow folk hanging around in these parts.
You have to give way to ambulances. Sam claims he saw an ambulance barge into the back of one car that was slow to pull over.
Heck, is any of this even remotely interesting to anyone other than me? Please comment.
Oh well, anyway, for the benefit of all concerned, I have to go now. I hope my next post has more structure than this. This sucks!
